New Art for ‘Eye for an Eye’ and Darwin Games at PAX Australia 2017

G’day everyone,

It has been a little bit of time between postings here on the blog, but I assure you we have been super busy in the background commissioning new art by the amazing ‘The Mico’, working on the finer details of quotes for ‘Eye for an Eye’, refining our rulebook and figuring out how we’re going to be moving forward.

The first huge news for us here at Darwin Games is that ‘The Mico’ is illustrating all of ‘Eye for an Eye’ for us. While my illustrations had been improving over time, I felt that it had gotten to the point where those illustrations were holding us and the Occulites back. So we have remedied that by approaching ‘The Mico’. He has been fantastic and we are super excited by the art that he is sending through. For example, check out our new box cover for ‘Eye for an Eye’! We are so stoked!

He has also nailed the character illustrations as you can see below with the Palaudis Chief Grublic and his Luftle advisor ‘Cobbie’.

Our second exciting bit of news is that Shae and I will be attending PAX Australia next week! If you’re going to be a PAX Australia, drop by booth TT 428 to say g’day to us and give Eye for an Eye a go. As you may or may not know, ‘Eye for an Eye’ is super fast and played in realtime. One round is played to a soundtrack in 5 minutes, a full game consists of three rounds and a full tournament can be played in an hour! So come down, learn the game, marvel at the new artwork and have a chat. We’d love to meet you!

That art looks pretty good! Congrats! Are you planning on running a kickstarter this year? Eye for an eye looks like a great piece of design.

Also are you planning on getting a new artist for any future supplementary products for Dawn? It’d be a real shame if you never made art for the series. In my personal opinion you should stay the artist for dawn. At the very least so the expansions match the base game. (Assuming there will be expansion eventually.) But of course, if you do use the new artist, I’m sure It’ll look good!

Also I just bought Dawn recently and its pretty great! I really like the design and how the campaign is set up.

      G’day Canyon!

Great to hear from you, thanks for picking up Dawn. Really happy to hear you are enjoying it. Make sure you pick up the extra downloadable scenario from the Dawn section of this page. 🙂

Thanks also for the kind words about Eye for an Eye. We are planning on Kickstarting it, just beginning to start spreading the word more actively and building momentum towards a launch on Kickstarter. We are hoping it will be this year, but it is looking more likely to be an early 2018 launch. However, we will keep everyone up to date as we make decisions. We are really excited to be going solo with Eye for an Eye. We hope that people really engage with it and choose to support it so we can continue adding extra characters, arenas, special events and maybe even boss battles for years to come. We love the system that much.

Regarding Dawn, at the moment we have not sold through our first print run yet. We are finding that once most people try it, they really enjoy it, but the cost to entry (due to the size of the game) has been causing people to hold off, as well as it really went under the radar. Because of this it doesn’t look like we’ll be able to do the expansions we were hoping to do for it any time soon. If that changes we’ll let you know of course. It also depends on whether there was interest from Eagle Games for an expansion and at this time we don’t think it has sold well enough for them to justify that. Luckily, Dawn – Rise of the Occulites is a very complete game as it is with enormous replayability. So anyone that has a copy will not be short of content for a long time.

All the best and thanks again for taking the time to drop us a line.
      Cheers,
      Ben and Shae.

It’s a shame Dawn isn’t doing really good, hopefully with the Eye for an Eye kick-starter, a little bit more attention will be given to the Occulite brand. Will you still be releasing extra scenarios for Dawn? I saw the training day one, is that the only one? Having more free scenarios might also generate a bit more buzz for Dawn, people like free stuff. Also are you going to get the Puscal/Nymphlet figures restocked? I really liked the design on those.

Yeah, thanks Canyon. We learned a lot from helping run the Kickstarter for Dawn and how the market reacted to it. I think that it puts us in great stead for running a really successful campaign for ‘Eye for an Eye’. We have lots more to share from the Occulite world, so we hope that they capture people’s attention.

We have a few more scenarios in playtesting, but a lot of our playtesting time recently has gone into Eye for an Eye to ensure it is as good as it can be. One of the scenarios we’ve been playtesting for Dawn looks at a cooperative scenario, were all tribes must survive a ranged ambush from off the board. There is a chance that one of the Tribes are traitors though and if that’s the case, their objectives change. Its a fantastic scenario, but just has a few kinks to ease out.

At the moment, those figures won’t be restocked unless there was some pretty big demand for them, but the Nymphlets may end up being made available at some point in some way. In terms of the Puscuals, we’d probably look at doing some more dynamic poses if we were to do more Puscuals (although we have been testing one for Eye for an Eye and he’s a beast to play against! Literally!)
